What is a Miter Saw?

A very solid Makita miter sawA miter saw is a very handy specialized saw used to accurately make crosscuts, miter cuts, compound cuts, and other precise angled cuts. As such, miter saws are typically used to cut wood for wall moldings, trim, picture frames, and so on. Despite being very precise tools, miter saws are also extremely versatile and used by carpenters, contractors, craftsmen, and everyday DIYers alike.

While there are several tools capable of making angled cuts, miter saws are by far the best due to the precision they provide. However, shopping for a miter saw is easier said than done as there are dozens of different chop saw reviews recommending a variety of saws that vary quite a bit in the top three categories: quality, price, and design.

Lucky for you, you’ve landed here, where you’ll find only the most accurate, thorough, and unbiased miter saw reviews. In other words, I’ve got you covered. So, now that you know what a miter saw is, keep reading to learn more about them and discover the best one for you.

Types of Miter Saws

There’s an endless variety of miter saws out there to choose from, but you may be surprised to know that there are only three types of miter saws worth considering. Sure, you could opt for a basic miter saw without bevel options and many of the features that make miter saws so great, but let’s a look at the three primary types of miter saws chosen by today’s professionals, craftsmen, and DIYers.

1. Compound Miter Saws

A man using Hitachi compound miter sawThere are plenty of compound miter saw reviews out there pitching various products left and right, but very few take the time to educate newbies about compound miter saws and exactly what they do. As alluded to above, most compound miter saws provide users with both single and dual bevel options, making them much more versatile in the variety of angles they’re able to cut. From bevel cuts and miter cuts to crosscuts, and compound cuts, there’s virtually no cut a 10 or 12 compound miter saw can’t make.

  • Very accurate and precise
  • Extremely versatile

  • Not ideal for cutting wider pieces of wood

The Hitachi C10FCE2 15-Amp 10-inch Single Bevel Compound Miter Saw may not be the absolute best compound miter saw around, but it’s by far the most popular and a solid option if you’re just starting out. As you’ll see below, however, there are plenty of other top rated miter saws available with even more features and advantages.

2. Sliding Compound Miter Saw

Photograph of the rugged machine DEWALT DWS780I go over some pretty great compound sliding miter saw options in the reviews below. However, it will certainly help to learn a little more about them before you begin looking for the best sliding compound miter saw out there and pulling the trigger on a hasty hefty purchase.

As their name suggests, sliding compound miter saws have all of the features of compound miter saws, but they also feature sliding arms as well, allowing you to cut wider pieces of wood. Therefore, they are mainly used by professional carpenters and contractors who regularly cut wider stock.

  • Very accurate
  • Extremely versatile
  • Able to be used on wider stock

  • Larger, heavier, and more difficult to transport

If you’ve already read any of our in-depth reviews, then you’ve probably figured out that there are several first-class options worth considering. However, with hundreds of rave reviews and one of the most technologically advanced designs on the market, the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw is not only extremely popular, but it’s arguably the best sliding miter saw as well.

3. Cordless Miter Saws

Cordless miter saw DEWALT DCS361BYou don’t have to be a genius or read a dozen reviews in order to figure out the biggest advantage of owning a cordless miter saw is its portability. Built with convenience and portability in mind, cordless miter saws are ideal for anyone who ever finds themselves in need of a miter saw away from their workshop.

If you’re a cordless kind of guy, you’ll be happy to know both compound and sliding compound varieties are available, allowing them to make crosscuts, bevel cuts, miter cuts, and compound cuts with the best in the business.

  • Very portable and easy to transport
  • Not reliant on an outside power source
  • Can be used anywhere

  • Limited run time
  • Heavier than corded models
  • Lack of bevel options

Makita makes a few pretty nice cordless miter saws, but the DEWALT DCS361B 20V Max Cordless Miter Saw gets my vote for being the best in the class. It has all of the features you would expect in a top-notch corded model, but you can take it anywhere you please and setup shop at will. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Want to learn more about each of these types of miter saws? You’re in luck, because we have plenty of other pages with detailed info about these types of miter saws and the best models in each category!

Table Saw vs Miter Saw

Table saw up closeWeekend warriors may be able to get by with just one, but many carpenters and builders require both a miter saw and a table saw. When shopping for top rated miter saws, it’s important to understand the key differences between the two.

For instance, miter saws are much safer than table saws as most models come equipped with an automatic brake feature. Table saws also kick material back at you, which can cause injury.

In terms of cutting at angles, miter saws clearly have the upper hand! Although table saws can cut angles, nothing can cut angles as precisely and efficiently as a miter saw.

The main advantage table saws have over miter saws is their ability to cut through much larger pieces of material. In fact, table saws can cut through 4 x 8-inch sheets with ease. Miter saws, on the other hand, can only cut material up to six inches wide at best. However, this is more than suitable for the trim and detail jobs they’re primarily used for.

Things to Consider When Buying the Best Miter Saw

Photo of a loaded workshopOne of the best things about miter saws is there versatility. Whether you need a crosscut, miter cut, bevel cut, or compound cut, quality miter saws like the Makita LS1016L or DEWALT DW715 are designed to get the job done. However, before you go any further and read my in-depth reviews on these miter saws and more, there are a few things you need to consider.

When shopping for miter saws, you need to first determine what you plan on using it for. The amount of work you plan on doing and the materials you will be working with should play a large role in your purchasing decision. While on the subject, you should also think about what type of cuts you intend on making, because some miter saws simply aren’t suitable for bevel and/or compound cuts.

Lastly, you will want to decide on whether or not you need a corded or cordless model. Some people work in remote locations and not everyone has a nice workshop with multiple electricity outlets, so cordless models like the DEWALT DCS361B 20V Max Cordless Miter Saw are more ideal.

Still not sure which type of miter saw is best for you? Well, keep reading to learn more about these amazing tools and determine which one is the best for you.

How to Use a Miter Saw

Circular saw in hands (it doesn't work like this)There’s no other tool like a miter saw for cutting tough angles and tight-fitting joints for door and window trim, crown molding, baseboards, and more. With a quality miter saw, it’s easy to fine-tune and make slight adjustments for the perfect angle or even to trim off material only the width of a hair.

However, you should prepare yourself to be startled the first time you pull the trigger on a miter saw. Most saws will jerk a little and whine while the blade speeds up. You should wait until the blade reaches top speed before beginning your cut.

Before you plug it in and begin, however, safety glasses are a must.

When you’re ready and wearing the proper protective gear, slowly lower the blade through the trim, molding, or board to complete the cut. Simply keep the saw in its finished position while you release the on switch, which will allow the blade to slow down and come to a complete stop before you raise it back up to its start position. It’s important to keep a firm grip on the handle until the blade is done spinning.

Aligning the blade to make a perfect cut can be tricky at first, but it will get easier with practice. When cutting, you should cut a little past the line or cutting mark. This will allow you to test the fit, make any needed adjustments, and cut off a little more.

Once again, you should maintain a firm grip and keep your other hand at least six inches away from the saw blade so the blade doesn’t move the board, molding, trim, tube, or so on from side to side when making the cut. That being said, many miter saws come with clamps for improved accuracy, safety, and ease of use.

When you’re done, simply unplug it, dust it off, and get it ready for the next use.

Miter Saw Maintenance

Owning a nice sports car or fancy boat is one thing, but keeping them in tip-top shape and perfect running condition is another thing altogether. Routine maintenance is an essential part of keeping your toys running their best, and it’s no different with a miter saw. In addition to being much more enjoyable to use, a well-tuned and maintained miter saw will provide you with greater accuracy and safety as well.

Therefore, it’s important to clean your miter saw after every use. Keeping it clean and free of dust and debris is an easy to way to extend the life of your saw. Since different miter saws have different maintenance schedules and procedures, you should follow the manual’s maintenance instructions. If your saw begins to overheat or you notice increased vibrations, turn it off immediately and have it checked out by a qualified technician.

Miter Saw Features

There are a ton of features that makes miter saws so great. Some of these features found on a quality miter saw are:

  • Sliding Fence – Any good 12 or 10 inch miter saw should possess a sliding fence, which can be easily moved when making a bevel cut.
  • Extra Miter Cut range – Some models have blades that can tilt greater than 60 degrees, providing an extra miter cut range.
  • Laser Guide – Regardless of whether you have a small miter saw or a large double bevel miter saw, sometimes it can be downright difficult lining up the blade with the cut line. A laser guide solves this dilemma by showing you the precise contact point of your blade on the material being cut.
  • Dust Port – This handy feature allows you to attach a dust or vacuum bag to collect most of the dust, keeping your workshop and clothes as clean as possible.
  • Electric Brake – An electric brake allows you to quickly stop the saw blade when transitioning between cuts.
  • Handle Adjustment – With this feature, you can adjust the handle exactly where you like it.

Of course, there are other great features of miters saws as well, but these are some of the common features that can be found on nearly every 12 or 10 miter saw today.
